Japan Dolphin Day
Today is the day to protest against the cruel killing of dolphins in Japan, although this is an ongoing problem so any time is a good time to spare a minute to write to a Japanese embassy asking them to put an end to this senseless carnage. According to In Defense of Animals, “Each year, Japanese fishermen eradicate about 23,000 dolphins and other small whales in the most brutal way imaginable. Operating with a permit from their government, they carry out the largest massacre of cetaceans anywhere in the world. Some of the meat is sold to the public, in spite of the fact that it is contaminated with mercury, methyl-mercury and PCBs”.
Today, 46 groups around the world in over 20 cities will be protesting as many international Japanese embassies and consulate offices as possible. The organizations are requesting the Japanese Minister of Health to put a warning label on all dolphin meat, similar to the warning label that has been placed on every package of cigarettes sold in Japan. If the warning label system is implemented, it should have a major impact on the demand for dolphin meat. A warning label may save the dolphins, and it may save the people who eat them.
