Americans and Canadians walk for farm animals

Walk For Farm Animals is the day when compassionate people take to the streets of tens of American and Canadian cities to raise awareness on the plight of farm animals, whose lives are spent in concentration camp-like conditions before being sent to a gruesome slaughterhouse. Organized by Farm Sanctuary, the walks also help raising funds for the organization’s rescue, education and advocacy work. The walks have attracted an increasing number of people each year, bringing together people who care about what factory farming is doing to animals, people and the environment. If you would like to join the Walk For Farm Animals, which take place between September and October, please check this page  to find out whether there is one taking place near you.

Veggie Pride Parade takes over New York City

bannerpeoplevpp.jpgI wish I could be there … but if you are in the area, make sure you join the throngs of vegetable-customed vegans (well, not quite everyone) marching down the Greenwich Village next Sunday, 17 May. It’s the Veggie Pride Parade and the line up starts at 11 to launch at 12noon.

This the second issue of the event that started last year, inspired by a similar initiative in Europe. It will be a day of fun, talks from luminaries from the animal rights movement, music and plant foods galore. Un-missable!

World Farm Animals Day

candle.gif

Today and the next few days are dedicated to the global remembering of our animal friends whose lives are destroyed to satisfy human greed. The numbers are staggering:
* “Animals raised for food account for 98% of all animal abuse and killing in the world.”
* “More than 55 billion land animals are killed for food each year - that’s 150 million/day.”
* “From birth, they are caged & crowded, deprived & drugged, manhandled & mutilated.”

Visit the website dedicated to the event for ideas on how you can join these days of action. Simple, local initiatives can do wonders to change people’s perceptions of how animals should be treated.

Animal Acres promotes Sanctuary Gala

Animal Acres, the first and one of the leading farm sanctuaries in the United States, hosted last Saturday its 2008 fund-raising gala. The sanctuary is located on a ranch 40 minutes from Hollywood and, as such, enjoys the support of some of Tinseltown stars, such as Daryl Hannah, who chaired the event. Raising funds for rescued animals with a dash of film glamour added in? Sounds good to me.

Animal Acres is directed by Farm Sanctuary co-founder Lorri Bauston. Bauston’s work has been featured in numerous documentaries and national news stories, including the Los Angeles Times, NPR, CBS This Morning, CNN, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and PrimeTime Live. She is considered the ‘pioneer’ of the farmed animal sanctuary movement, which has now grown to over 25 sanctuaries throughout the country. Here’s a video about the place. I love the concept of farm sanctuaries and their educational potential. Visit one and you’ll likely become a vegan.

Animal Rights National Conference 2008

Published by apasolini under Animal rights, Events Edit This

This week all eyes are on Washington D.C. which is where the Animal Rights National Conference 2008 will take place between 14 and 18 August. The event has been organized by FARM (Farm Animal Rights Movement) since 1981 and brings together the whole range of animal rights activism. The program includes 90 speakers from 60 animal protection groups in nine countries. Among key speakers is no one less than Heather Mills, who, I have to say, deserves our respect as one of the most dedicated celebrity activists and vegans around.
