Animals in the Philippines need help

You have likely heard of the devastating floods that have hit the Philippines. Last weekend, Tropical Storm Ketsana, dumped 42 centimeters of rain on Manila in just 12 hours, flooding 80% of the city and causing the deaths of 143 people and hundreds of thousands of animals. The floodwaters rose so high that residents and their companion animals had to take to the roofs of their houses. So many animals didn’t make it, however. There are reports of dead dogs floating in the water. Tragically, many of them didn’t stand a chance, as they were chained to fixed objects, a common practice in Manila, and would have drowned as soon as the waters rose above their head. Some organizations are working to provide relief to these animals in need and they need your help. Please make a donation to Network For Animals who’s present in the Philippines. I do realize times are tough for everyone but this is an emergency. There’s more rain predicted to come over the weekend so the situation may get even worse. Any help will make a vital difference.

Help Ida rescue buffalos from Santa Catalina Island

The other day I saw amazing footage of a massive rescue operation involving bulls. Santa Catalina Island, a few miles off the California coast, became the breeding ground of non-native bulls taken there in 1925 as part of a silent film. And they bred all right. In order to avoid the auctioning of the animals and their possible killing, IDA (In Defense of Animals) managed to remove part of the bull population back to where they belong: South Dakota. The rescue operation of the 105 animals involved several barges across 23 miles of ocean, then 1,800 miles by highway to South DakotaIDA now has the opportunity to rescue and relocate 150 more buffalo so they can join their cousings on Standing Rock, South Dakota. The organization needs $35,000 to get the job done. So, if you can spare a little bit of money, you could make all the difference to these gorgeous animals and avoid a huge amount of future suffering.

Zoo closed down in Lebanon

Published by apasolini under Rescues, Video, speciesism Edit This

Good news for animals abandoned in a roadside zoo in Lebanon. After a month of negotiating with the owner, Animals Lebanon was finally able to close down what it calls ‘one of the worst zoos in Lebanon and give the animals the care they so desperately need’. On Friday, 13 February, the organization rescued nearly 40 animals.

Now Animals Lebanon need help now to care for these animals. They all need a place to live, whether in a sanctuary, rehabilitated and returned to nature, or adopted into homes, with vet care and proper food.

The moving video below shows the appaling state the animals found themselves in and raises serious questions about the legality of such operations. Zoos are nothing but animal prisons and they should be closed. Their only educational purpose is to teach children that animals can be kept behind bars and used as humans wish. They are, in short, speciesist enterprises of exploitation.
